Arkadi is the most historic monastery of Crete. It is one of the Eastern Orthodox Monasteries. The Arkadi Monastery has a unique natural beauty and a prestigious history.
Arkadi monastery played an active role in the Cretan resistance of Ottoman rule during the Cretan revolt of 1866. 943 Greeks, mostly women and children, found refuge in the gunpowder depot of the monastery. In order to save them from the Ottomans, Kostis Giamboudakis blew up the depot, spreading death, not only to the Christians, but also to the invaders.
